B McCarroll-Butler is a saxophonist, clarinetist and composer living in Toronto.
Their work is concerned with a variety of musical, sociopolitical and psychological issues including the joy and fear of contemporary queer existence, spirituality and connection to nature, and empathy, loss and solidarity in the colonial context of North America.
They lead two of their own groups: saxophone duo The Silent Shout (with Patrick Smith, debut release incoming April 2019) and The Band Named Crow, a large improvising ensemble that premiers music based on the surreal worlds of Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami.
B is an active side musician in many overlapping scenes of Toronto, playing with The Tortoise Orchestra (Mingjia Chen), Kontraband Kollektif (Lieke Van der Voort), the Kohen Hammond Chamber Ensemble, the Element Choir, and many others. They have also worked as an arranger, storyteller and performer with the Polaris-Prize nominated Queer Songbook Orchestra, a Toronto based 12-piece chamber pop ensemble dedicated to exploring and uplifting queer narrative in pop music.
